Folder sharing in is made possible by the Samba implementation of SMB protocol. SMB or Server Message Block is a protocol mainly used for file sharing between network computers, though they can also be used for printing and IPC (inter-process communication)

To enable folder sharing in Ubuntu, you need to first open the Nautilus file browser. To do this, click on the Places → Home Folder from the menu.

From there, right-click on the folder to be shared and choose the Sharing Options

You’ll come to the Folder Sharing window.

To enable sharing of the folder, click on the 'Share this folder‘s checkbox.

If you’re doing this for the first time, you’ll be prompted to install the necessary services. In this case, it’s the Samba’s server. Click on the Install service to continue

The system will download and install the required packages for you. This might take a few minutes.

Once done, you’ll be notified by the following window. Click the Close button to continue.

GNOME session need to be restarted before sharing can really be enabled. Click on the Restart session to continue. You might need to save all your work before clicking the button though.

Once the session resumes, proceed to the first few steps of enabling the folder sharing. Choose the folder to share in the file browser, and tick on the Share folder checkbox. Here you can choose the name you want the share to be, and optionally you can also set the comment for the share. You might also want to check the Guest access checkbox to enable passwordless access to the share. The share is read-only, unless if you tick on the Allow others to create and delete files in the folder. once done, click on the Create Share button.

Once you go back to the file browser, you’ll notice that the icon of the folder you’ve just shared has changed.

You can still run your old DOS programs right from macOS without having to poweroff your machine and boot up from your MS-DOS diskette by following these steps;

1. Install Homebrew from the terminal.

   $ /usr/bin/ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)"

2. Install DOSBox via homebrew.

   $ brew install dosbox

3. Run your program’s executable from DOSBox.

   $ dosbox Downloads/Golden Axe/GOLD.EXE

Linux administrators have few options when it comes to adding a new user to the system, from filling up forms in distribution / desktop environment specific nice GUIs, to running through the command line with options and switches. For the geeky administratorss, there are always configuration files that can manually be edited just for this purpose.

The 2 most common programs used to add a user are, adduser and useradd. They are both quite similar (heck, they do the same thing anyway, which is to add user of course), but are a bit different in their interactivity level.

To extract a tar.gz file, the most basic syntax is as the following;

$ tar xvf filename.tar.gz

The command will extract the file to the current working directory. Current versions of the tar program doesn’t require the -z switch, as it auto detects the file format and extract accordingly.

To extract in verbose mode, and to a directory called /target, the following is the syntax;

$ tar xvf filename.tar.gz -C /target

Some Linux distributions such as Ubuntu comes with Bash completion by default. That enables auto-completion of application parameters rather than just the application names at the Bash terminal by pressing the tab key.

The functionality is provided by bash-completion program and it’s not a standard feature in macOS. You’ll have to do it via Homebrew (a third-party package manager for macOS) by following these steps;

1. Install Homebrew

   $ /usr/bin/ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)"

2. Install bash-completion via Homebrew

   $ brew install bash-completion

3. Enable bash-completion

   $ . /usr/local/etc/bash_completion

dig (domain information groper) is a flexible tool for interrogating DNS name servers. It performs DNS lookups and displays the answers that are returned from the name server(s) that were queried. Most DNS administrators use dig to troubleshoot DNS problems because of its flexibility, ease of use and clarity of output. Other lookup tools tend to have less functionality than dig.

Although dig is normally used with command-line arguments, it also has a batch mode of operation for reading lookup requests from a file. A brief summary of its command-line arguments and options is printed when the -h option is given. Unlike earlier versions, the BIND 9 implementation of dig allows multiple lookups to be issued from the command line.

Unless it is told to query a specific name server, dig will try each of the servers listed in /etc/resolv.conf.

When no command line arguments or options are given, dig will perform an NS query for “.” (the root).

It is possible to set per-user defaults for dig via ${HOME}/.digrc. This file is read and any options in it are applied before the command line arguments.

The IN and CH class names overlap with the IN and CH top level domains names. Either use the -t and -c options to specify the type and class, use the -q the specify the domain name, or use “IN.” and “CH.” when looking up these top level domains.

KDE looks for programs in the ~/.kde/Autostart directory to be executed during it’s startup. The way to execute programs as KDE starts would be to;

1. Copy programs directly to the directory
2. Create (soft) link to programs from the directory
3. Create a script which will execute other programs

The first method is very straightforward, and the second method can be achieved using the ln command. The following example is to run superkaramba as KDE starts.

$ cd ~/.kde/Autostart/
$ ln -s /usr/bin/superkaramba mykaramba

The third option is my personal favorite, as it provides a great level of flexibility. The following is an example bash script placed in the ~/.kde/Autostart/ directory to run gpg-agent, export a variable, and start the program katapult and conky;

export GPG_AGENT_INFO=/home/shakir/.gnupg/S.gpg-agent
/usr/bin/katapult &
/usr/bin/conky &

Please make sure all programs are executable by running chmod, probably as the following example;

$ chmod +x ~/.kde/Autostart/*

If not specified, Symfony will load the application’s default module if no action is defined in the URL. The default module will show this page,

which might not be very useful to the visitors.

To make it default to the module mypage for example, edit the route homepage and replace default with mypage.

If you have the following fstab entry and want to mount the partition using the UUID instead of device name, you just need to add UUID= followed by you partition’s UUID in your fstab and you’re done.
