How to show running processes in Linux
You can use several programs to view running processes in Linux, and they come in both graphical and command-line options.

Linux distributions with GNOME desktop environment come with GNOME System Monitor while KDE has System Activity. However, you can always rely on ps and top in all Linux distributions and other Unix-based operating systems.
Both are command-line utilities, installed by default in most Linux systems, and could be your only option when doing remote administration via SSH.
Steps to list and show details of running processes in Linux:
-
View running process using ps.
$ ps PID TTY TIME CMD 1082 pts/0 00:00:00 bash 1102 pts/0 00:00:00 ps
By default, ps selects all processes with the same effective user ID (euid=EUID) as the current user and associated with the same terminal as the invoker. It displays the process ID (pid=PID), the terminal associated with the process (tname=TTY), the cumulated CPU time in [DD-]hh:mm:ss format (time=TIME), and the executable name (ucmd=CMD). Output is unsorted by default.
-
View more running processes with more details using ps.
