Google Chrome, by default, uses your operating system's default setting to connect to the network and the internet. Your system, on the other hand, is usually configured with a direct connection to the internet.

Chrome provides a Settings menu for proxy though it effectively opens your operating system's proxy configuration tool. To configure a proxied connection just for Google Chrome or Chromium is to use a proxy plugin such as FoxyProxy or via a private VPN provider's browser plugin such as by SurfShark.

Steps to change proxy settings from Google Chrome and Chromium:

  1. Open Chrome's Setting page.

Go to chrome://settings from the URL bar.

  2. Click on Advanced at the bottom of the page or from the sidebar.
  3. Scroll down till you come to the System section .

Proxy management browser plugins such as FoxyProxy will be listed in the section if installed

  4. Click on Open your computer's proxy settings to configure your system's proxy setting.
  5. Configure your proxy accordingly based on your operating system.

The caveat to this approach is that it will configure the system's proxy setting whereby all the other traffic for your systems will go through the configured proxy. To route only your browser's traffic through a proxy, it is advisable to use proxy extensions such as FoxyProxy
