How to access shared folder from Ubuntu

Desktop and server users create shared folders to allow access to their files with other users in the same network.

On Windows, it's supported by the File and printer sharing feature, while SAMBA provides the same functionality for Linux and other Unix-based operating systems. Either way, the folder sharing functionality implements CIFS / SMB protocol and works across operating systems.

You can access CIFS / SMB shared folder from a Ubuntu desktop via the default Files application.

1. Launch Files application.

   
2. Go to Other Locations from the sidebar menu.

   
3. Click on the hosts listed in the Networks section or enter the IP address with the smb:// protocol prefix of the host and click on the Connect button.

   
4. Click on the folder that you want to access.

   

5. Click Connect with Anonymous selected if anonymous login is allowed by the server or click on the Registered User radio button, enter login details for the server, and click Connect.

   
6. Begin accessing files and folders made available by the remote host.

   
7. Click the eject icon to unmount the shared folder once you're done.
